The Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School girls basketball team has established solid ground during its first round of games in the East Central Conference. Currently 9-0 against conference opponents, the Chargers have not yet met a challenge they couldn’t beat this season.

The girls haven’t lost to any team since the beginning of the season when they dropped their first three games against non-conference opponents.

Head coach Jason Walz said the beginning of the season involved confusion as to the roles of the players.

“There was an adjustment period where we had to figure out who would fill the void left by last year’s seniors,” he said. Since then, KML has found itself with an 11 game winning streak.

The team has an overall record of 14-3.

The girls have dominated their conference, beating every team by at least 9 points with the exception a recent 5-point win against Plymouth.

Coach Walz gave credit to the leadership exhibited by the seniors this year. “The senior class has not lost many games in their basketball careers because they don’t like to lose, and they are willing to work hard to make sure it happens infrequently,” he said.

On paper, the Chargers’ greatest conference challenge will be against Waupun on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

The Warriors are 7-2 in conference and currently in second place. Kettle beat Waupun by 10 points at home in early January; however, coach Walz felt the game in February won’t be as easy.
“Waupun is going to be a fun challenge,” he said. “We know they have a good nucleus of players and if we win that game we will clinch a share of our 5th straight conference championship.”

The Chargers have five more conference games this season, reaching into mid-February. As the girls close out the season, Kettle fans will be watching to see whether they can maintain their No. 1 spot.
