Peter D. Berkholtz, 72, of Kensington, MD, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 24, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD.
He was born on May 25, 1943, in West Bend, WI, the son of the late Harold and Alberta (Anderson) Berkholtz. Peter graduated from Georgetown University in 1966. After college, he joined the US Marine Corps, served during the Vietnam War, and was awarded a Purple Heart. Peter was united in marriage to India “Dee” Molyneaux on August 26, 1978, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Peter enjoyed spending his summers at Big Cedar Lake in Wisconsin, teaching his family to fish and tirelessly maintaining the historic cottage. He mentored and touched the lives of many young men through coaching youth soccer.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, Dee; he was the devoted father of, Noelani Berkholtz of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mathew Berkholtz and his wife Jane of Yukon, OK, and John “Jay” Berkholtz and his wife Sara of Silver Spring, MD; Peter was the proud grandfather of three grandchildren, Evelyn, Jack “Auggie,” and Patrick Berkholtz; he was the dedicated son-in-law of Rita “Lika” (Essex) and the late John Molyneaux; his sister Ruth (Berkholtz) Ciriacks and her husband Bill; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and good friends.
Funeral Service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, January 30, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 9705 Summit Ave, Kensington, MD 20895. Relatives & friends invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MSI Youth Soccer Scholarship Fund established in Peter’s name.
A gathering of relatives and friends will be held this summer, with date to be announced, on Lone Island – Big Cedar Lake.
