Newburg Fire Chief Mark Chesak said the initial call came in at 11 a.m. about a garage fire at 3040 State Highway 33.

“The home owner was injured as he tried to pump gas out of his boat that was in the garage,” he said.

“The pump he had was electric and somehow something ignited on him and just flashed over and it started the fire.”

The man had burns to his legs and arms. Nothing life threatening according to Chesak.

“The fire was fully involved in the garage and then it went to the house and it pretty much totaled the house,” Chesak said. “The toughest thing was it spread so fast. With it starting in the garage it went into the basement and then the upper floors at the same time and just the time of day and with the response during that time of day it was hard and it just took off.”

There were 14 area fire departments that responded and assisted the Newburg Fire Department including Fillmore Fire Department,  Saukville Fire Department, West Bend Fire Department, Cedarburg Fire Department, Jackson Fire Department, Waubeka Fire Department, Fredonia Fire Department, Port Washington Fire Department, Village of Grafton Fire Department, Boltonville Fire Department, Kewaskum Fire Department, Silver Creek Fire Department – Sheboygan County WI, Germantown Fire Department , and Slinger Fire Department.
