Obit: John Roy Volkert, 92, of West Bend. John served in World War II in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a pilot.

Jan. 29, 2017 – West Bend, WI – John Roy Volkert, 92, passed away Saturday January 28, 2017 at New Perspectives in West Bend.

John was born on April 17, 1924, to John R. and Anna E. (nee Loehr) Volkert in Milwaukee.  He graduated from Boy’s Tech in Milwaukee in 1942.  John served in World War II in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a pilot.  On June 16, 1945 he married Dolores M. Belke.  After the war he worked at Burroughs Corp. as a machine repairman until his retirement at the age of 55.

John’s catholic faith was important to him and he volunteered as a lector and Eucharistic Minister, as well as in other capacities at Holy Angel’s Catholic Church.  John enjoyed the game of golf as well as bowling.  He bowled in several bowling leagues.  He was also an avid bridge and sheepshead player and loved the challenge of crossword puzzles.  John was a member of the VFW, past Commander and Quarter Master and past member of the Honor Guard and also a volunteer for the Washington Co. Senior Center.

John’s love and dedication really showed through when his beloved Dolores was diagnosed with Dementia.  He was her sole caregiver for 7 years.  He was a generous, caring and loving husband and father.  His strong work ethic set an example for the next generation.

John will be deeply missed by his seven children; Richard (Nancy), Ellain (Ken) Puls, Barbara (Joseph) Kowalski, John Charles (Sue), Paul (Tricia), Karen (Rick) Langdon and Steven (Joni). He is further survived by 38 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, his brother Marvin (Eloise) Volkert, sister-in-law Harriet Belke, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dolores, daughter Adrianne (Tom) Swingen, great grandson, Caleb Peterson, brother Robert Volkert, sister Evelyn (Ed) Laszeski, in laws Leona (Donald) Miller, Louis (Norma) Jacobi and Louis Belke.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church (139 N 8th Ave, West Bend) with Father Jerome Repenshek presiding. His final place of rest will be at Holy Angels Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church only on Saturday, February 4 from 9 a.m. until time of Mass (11 a.m.).  Full Military Honors to follow.

    My dad also owned Sports Apparel Plus in West Bend for 8 years. First in the Kohl’s mall on South Main, then moved it downtown next to the theater (currently the Candy Man) location.
