Dr. Robert Gibson honored with St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Annual Excellence in Medicine Award | By Timothy Olsen

June 2, 2018 – West Bend, WI –  Dr. Robert Gibson, an internal medicine physician at St. Joseph’s Hospital and West Bend resident, has been honored with the fifth annual Excellence in Medicine Award from St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Physicians and nurses at St. Joseph’s Hospital were invited to nominate one of their peers for the award, which recognizes the accomplishments of an individual physician or advanced practitioner at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Nominees were evaluated based on upholding clinical practice standards, leadership, innovation, volunteerism to improve health care in a local community, the ability to communicate with colleagues and staff, and how the nominee supports the hospital’s mission, vision and values.

“Caring for the West Bend community as in internist for his entire career, Dr. Gibson has provided complex care for patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital since long before the hospital provided the level of speciality services that it offers today,” said co-nominators Dr. Pat Gardner, associate chief medical officer, and Dr. Gary Herdrich, family practice physician. “Experiencing the evolving practice of hospital medicine and recruitment challenges, he was instrumental in the vision for and implementation of the hospitalist program at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He’s engaged in the total care of not only his personal patients, but all of those treated in our hospital. His combination of clinical excellence and servant leadership make him an outstanding candidate for the excellence in medicine award.”

“I could not have done any of this alone,” said Dr. Gibson. “My wife, Sheree, has always been there for me. And there have been so many caring, hard-working and dedicated professionals in all branches of healthcare at my side. I have been very fortunate to be able to give back to a community that has given so much to me.”

Dr. Gibson has served in many medical staff leadership positions at SJH, including medical staff president. He also has a strong history of volunteerism and community support, the most prominent of which may be his role at the
Albrecht Free Clinic. As medical director of the clinic, he not only cares for the vulnerable population in West Bend, but works to expand that care such as with dental services. He continually advocates for the clinic and the population it serves.
