Oct. 12, 2017 – Allenton, WI – As part of our daily dosage of fire safety information, the St. Lawrence Fire Company and Allenton Fire Department are relaying information that hopefully will be taken will save lives and property.

From U.S. Fire Administration National Fire Data Center Reports:  “Each year, from 2013 to 2015, portable heater fires in residential buildings — a subset of heating fires in residential buildings — accounted for an estimated average of 1,650 fires in the U.S.

These fires resulted in an annual average of 90 deaths, 175 injuries, and $84 million in property loss.

The term “portable heater fires” applies to those fires that are caused by catalytic heaters, oil-filled heaters, or other heaters, such as electric heaters, that are designed to be carried or moved for use in a variety of locations.

Portable heaters are a subset of space heaters — small heaters designed to heat specific areas or rooms of a building.”

All of us have used portable heaters or use them in special rooms of our house.  It is imperative that we be sure they are clean, that they are a safe distance from paper, clothing, etc. and are NOT left unattended.

In relationship to this year’s Mission Statement, “Every Second Counts; Plan 2 ways out” we urge your family to have a plan and practice your plan.

Reminder the two fire departments are hosting a very interactive/educational open house and pancake breakfast this coming Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Allenton Fire Station.

The hours of the open house are 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

There will be lifesaving activities for every age, including proper use of a fire extinguisher, escaping from the Survive Alive House and much more.

Special this year will be able see a replica of the Squad 51 from the TV show “EMERGENCY.”

Tickets are available Romie’s BP, Zuern Building Products, and Farmers Feed and Grain in Allenton and St. Lawrence Equipment in St. Lawrence.
