Obit: Jeannette E. “Jeanne” Backhaus-Moe, 93, Kewaskum

jeanne web smallJeannette E. “Jeanne” Backhaus-Moe, 93, of Kewaskum, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Kathy Hospice in the town of Polk, with her family at her side.

Jeanne was born on February 7, 1923, in Wautoma, the daughter of the late Chester and Beatrice (Douglas) Wilcox. On April 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Howard Backhaus in Berlin. Howard passed away on July 13, 1972. On March 29, 1980, Jeanne was united in marriage to Philip Moe at St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kewaskum. Philip preceded Jeanne in death on December 27, 2003.

Jeanne was a member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Kewaskum where she was involved in the Ladies Guild. She was also a member of Washington County Retired Educators, Delta Kappa Gamma – Alpha Beta Society, an honorary member of the Kewaskum Women’s Club, and the Washington County Historical Society.

Jeanne attended grade school at Raymond Rural School, High School at Dafoe High School in Wautoma, Waushara Teachers College and the UW Oshkosh. She began teaching in 1941 at Sunnyside in Washington County. In 1944 she accepted a position at Kewaskum Elementary School, as a 7th and 8th grade teacher. In 1950, she retired temporarily to raise their three children until they were of school age. She then continued teaching until retiring in 1985.

Jeanne enjoyed her many years of teaching and her healthy active years of retirement. The retirement years passed quickly doing voluntary work at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Kewaskum library board. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, genealogy, traveling, and most of all being with her family and grandchildren. She will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Those Jeanne leaves behind to cherish her memory include three children, Jody (Harry) Krueger of Kewaskum, Ann (Gary) Schneider of West Bend, and Lyn (Vonda) Backhaus of Tomahawk; six grandchildren, Chad (Debbie) Krueger, Erin (Jason) Olsen, Jason Schneider, Matthew (Heidi) Schneider, Kaitlyn Backhaus (special friend, Scott Wishart), Kortney Backhaus (fiancé, Joe Pilecky); nine great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her two husbands and parents, Jeanne was preceded in death by her four brothers; a sister; four brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.

Funeral services for Jeanne will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kewaskum. Rev. Troy Swenson will officiate and burial will follow at Lutheran Memorial Park in Kewaskum.

Jeanne’s family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Memorials to St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund or to KEYS are appreciated.

The Myrhum Patten Miller and Kietzer Funeral Homes have been entrusted with Jeanne’s arrangements.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Kathy Hospice for the care provided to Jeanne.
