Obit: Mary Engelke, 95, West Bend

Mary E. Engelke (nee Knaub) age 95 of West Bend died peacefully on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Cottages at Cedar Run. She was born October 30, 1920 in Fountain City, WI to William and Martha (nee Wunderlich) Knaub and married Robert E. Engelke on September 27, 1947 at Grace Church in Milwaukee. Robert preceded her in death on November 4, 1967.

Mary graduated from Fountain City High School and the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN with a degree in Social Work. She worked in various public welfare departments in Buffalo County, Washington County and Milwaukee County and also for the Division of Children’s Services in Madison. Following the death of her husband in 1967 she worked at the Threshold as a home consultant, retiring in 1983.

Mary was a charter member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church where she was a member of the Christian Woman’s Society. She enjoyed volunteer work, reading and golf and cards, especially playing Bridge. Mary was a long-time Green Bay Packer season ticket holder and enjoyed watching to the games.

Mary is survived by her 2 children: Christine (Tom) King of Middleton and John of West Bend, 5 grandchildren: Jeffrey (Lisa) King of Black Earth, WI, Ben (Colleen) King of New Prague, MN, Allison (Michael) Swartz of Chicago, Kilah Engelke of West Bend and Keven (Rebecca) Engelke of Denver, CO and 6 great-grandchildren: Noah, Emma, Hana, Sam, Molly and Aidan King.

She will be dearly missed and was loved by all her family and many friends.

Mary’s family would like to extend a special and heartfelt Thank You to the staff and nurses at the Cottages at Cedar Run for the kind and compassionate care given to Mary.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in West Bend with burial following in Holy Angels Cemetery. The family will greet visitors on Thursday, at the church from 10:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Memorials to the Cedar Community Foundation or the Threshold are appreciated.
