Obit: Mildred M. “Millie” Hawig, 103, of West Bend

 

Dec. 3, 2017 – West Bend, WI – Mildred M. “Millie” Hawig age 103 of West Bend, formerly of Newburg died Friday, December 1, 2017 at The Waterford at West Bend. She was born October 16, 1914 in St. Augustine, Town of Trenton to the late Joseph and Anna (nee Lettner) Wollner.

She attended and graduated from Holy Trinity School in Newburg, West Bend High School, with the class of 1932 and the Dodge County Teachers College in Mayville.

Millie was employed at the West Bend Company until she married Albert Hawig, the love of her life, on June 21, 1941. Al passed away on March 16, 1990. Mildred lived in Newburg until August of 2010 when she became a resident of The Waterford at West Bend.

She was employed at various places including the State Bank of Newburg, the Newburg Post Office, Northern Signal and retired from Modern Equipment in Port Washington in 1978 where she was an office worker.

Mildred was very active in Holy Trinity Church in Newburg. She could be found in the church kitchen during church functions, german potato salad being her specialty, and she sang in the church choir for many years. She loved to bake so there was always a dessert for weddings and funerals and for her neighbors or friends who might need some home comfort.

She loved to sing and dance, the radio was always turned on and she and Al would often dance around the house. She was also an avid letter writer, having kept many Newburg servicemen and former residents informed of local events. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, member of and past president of the Christian Women Confraternity, member of the Apostolate of Suffering and the Good Samaritan Guild.

She was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always interested in their activities.

Millie is survived by her children: Mary (Norman) Kufahl of Kewaskum, Joan (Bob) Hawig-Goebel of Grafton, Jane (Peter) Breitlow of West Allis and John (Brenda) Hawig of Sheboygan and 8 grandchildren: Dan (Sue) Kufahl, Beth (Randy) Stark, Mike (Jill) Kufahl, Steve (Kathy) Kohl, Jessica (Todd) Allion, Tony (Sarah) Breitlow, Tom (Chris) Breitlow and Lisa (Brian) Spaeth. She is further survived by her 17 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren with 3 more babies expected within the next year and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a brother and sister (twins) in infancy, a sister (Cecelia) Sr. Raphaelita Wollner, as well as 4 brothers-in-law and 6 sisters-in-law: Sally (Herb) Weske, Norma (Leo) Wietor, Wilmer (Blanche)Hawig, Edward (Catherine)Hawig, Margaret Hawig and Viola Hawig.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg with burial following in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Reverend Kevin Kowalske will preside. The family will greet visitors at the church from 9:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials to Holy Trinity Church or the Newburg Fire Department are appreciated.

The family wishes to thank the staff of The Waterford at West Bend and Hartland Hospice for the compassionate and loving care given to Millie.
