February 24, 2020 – Hartford, WI – George S. Schauer, 81, of Hartford, Wisconsin went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, February 21, 2020, at the Cottages at Cedar Ridge in West Bend, WI, surrounded by his loving family.

George Samuel Schauer

George was born in 1939 in Hartford, WI, to Hilmer and Helen (nee McAlpine) Schauer. He was united in marriage to Sandie Wittenburg on April 22, 1961, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hartford, WI.

George graduated from Hartford Union High School in 1957. He served his country in the Army National Guard in Hartford’s Heavy Mortar Company, later the Combat Support Company. His division was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961.

Cars were a special passion for George; he enjoyed working on his ’36 Ford, ‘40’s Mercury, ’57 Chevy, ’61 Cadillac, a go-cart and a dune buggy, and passed his automotive knowledge on to his three sons. He was later the proud owner of a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette Brickyard 400 Parade Car. George was fortunate to be able to find a career that allowed him to follow his passion; he began working at the Hartford Automotive Parts Centre as a senior in high school. In 1988 he became part owner of the business, which eventually included stores in five locations. He retired after over 50 years in the industry. Following his first retirement, George worked as a greeter for the Shimon Funeral Home.

George deeply loved his family, and greatly enjoyed visiting his sons and their families. He and Sandie also traveled extensively following his retirement.

George is survived by his loving wife Sandie; children, Steven (Kathleen) Schauer of Davenport, Iowa, Alan (Penny) Schauer of Madison, WI, and David (Michelle) Schauer of Saddlebrooke, Missouri; grandchildren, Alexander, Abigail, Hannah, Benjamin, Christina, Kaitlin and Andrew; and brother John (Jeanine) Schauer. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Joyce Williams, and her husband Burt Williams.

Memorial services for George will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at noon at the Shimon Funeral Home, 824 Union Street, Hartford, WI 53027. Family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the service.

Memorials may be made to Northbrook Church or to the Wounded Warriors Project.

The family especially thanks the staff of the Cottages at Cedar Ridge and the staff of Cedar Community Hospice.
