To: Neighbors in West Bend/Washington County From: Toucan Custard

August 20, 2017 – West Bend, WI – A nice note of thanks as the crew from Toucan Custard, their spouses, friends and a couple customers (Bob Lynn and Congressman Glenn Grothman) gathered in front of the restaurant on Saturday for one last time.

It’s been 27 years since Al Moehr and his family took over Toucan Custard in West Bend. The 1950’s-era diner has been a staple in the community for generations.

After Al died last year the family decided to put the restaurant up for sale and move onto another chapter in their lives.

Saturday, August 19 was their last day behind the counter.   Friends and former employees and neighbors came to buy a final scoop or two and wish the girls well.

Bobby Lynn, who was the first customer of the Moehr’s 27 years ago, was also officially the last.

And at 10 p.m. when the restaurant closed for the night the big red and yellow Toucan Custard sign on Main Street went dark for the Moehr family for the final time.

There were hugs and tears and a silent sense of relief that the girls and their mom had made it through the day.

And in classic Moehr fashion they joined with staff, arm in arm… to thank the community for its support.

Behind the scenes:  Here’s how that shot went the first time…
