UW-WC Student Spotlight | Adam Bunkelman of Kewaskum | By Sue Bausch

 

Jan. 2, 2018 – Washington Co., WI – UW-Washington County’s January Student Spotlight is on Adam Bunkelman of Kewaskum.  After graduating from Kewaskum High School, he served four years in the U.S. Navy.

Working as a Machinist Mate on the USS Carl Vinson (CNV-70), his job involved transferring the steam into the ship’s turbines to power the vessel. Now as a student at UW-WC, Adam heads up the Student Veterans’ Club and is learning more about photography – an interest he hopes to weave into his career.

The Spotlight highlights a UW-WC student’s academic achievement and provides the community with an inside look into campus life and a greater understanding of the diverse profiles and experiences of our students.

Why​ ​did​ ​you​ ​choose​ ​UW-Washington​ ​County?​ ​​I​ ​choose​ ​to​ ​attend​ ​UW-WC​ ​because it’s located close ​to​ ​home.

Outside​ ​of​ ​being​ ​a​ ​college​ ​student,​ ​what​ ​takes​ ​up​ ​your​ ​free​ ​time?​ ​​​​ ​​​ I work as a Lineman at the West Bend airport. My job involves moving the aircraft around, filling out fuel orders and keeping the planes clean. On campus, I’m active in the​ ​Student​ ​Veterans Club​. In addition, as an avid photographer with a strong interest in trains, I’m a member of ​the​ ​Kettle​ ​Moraine​ ​Ballast​ ​Scorchers​ ​Model​ ​Railroad​ ​Club​, ​based​ ​out of​ ​West​ ​Bend.

Who​ ​is​ ​your​ ​favorite​ ​professor​ ​or​ ​staff​ ​member?​​ ​I​ ​have​ ​two​ ​in​ ​mind​ ​that​ ​have​ ​helped​ ​me​ ​out​ ​quite​ ​a​ ​bit.​ ​ The first is Anna Moisiadis,​ ​my​ ​photography,​ ​digital,​ ​painting,​ ​and​ ​drawing​ ​class​ ​professor.​ ​She​ ​has​ ​helped​ ​me​ ​look​ ​at​ ​things​ ​in​ ​different ways​ ​to​ ​make​ ​it​ ​art.​ ​My other favorite is History​ Professor,​ ​Kirk​ ​Tyvela​.​ ​His​ ​insights​ ​into history​ ​have expanded my​ ​passion​ ​for​ ​history,​ ​too.

What​ ​is​ ​your​ ​favorite​ ​class?​ ​​One​ ​of​ ​the​ ​classes​ ​that​ ​I​ ​have enjoyed​ ​the​ ​most​ ​has​ ​been​ ​the​ ​Painting​ ​101​ ​class.​ ​This​ ​class has​ ​taught​ ​me​ ​how​ ​to​ ​paint​ and ​also understand ​the​ ​different​ ​values​ ​in​ ​shapes​ ​and​ ​objects.

What​ ​do​ ​you​ ​plan​ ​to​ ​do​ ​after​ ​UW-Washington​ ​County?​​ ​I​ ​am​ ​not​ ​sure​ ​​where​ ​I​ ​will​ ​head​ ​next​ when ​I finish​ ​my studies​ ​at​ ​UW-WC.​ ​I​ ​would​ ​like​ ​to​ ​find​ ​a​ job related to ​photography​ ​but​ ​I​ also​ ​have​ ​a​ ​passion​ ​for​ ​the​ ​railroad,​ ​so​ ​I might​ ​see​ ​what​ ​develops.

Advice​ ​for​ ​incoming​ ​UW-WC​ ​students: ​​​ It helps to remember that every​ ​professor​ ​is different​ ​and​ ​some​ ​may​ ​not​ ​work​ ​with​ ​how​ ​you​ ​learn. However, if you talk with them,​ they​ ​are​ ​willing​ ​to​ ​work​ ​with​ ​you.​ ​Ultimately, you are​ ​the​ ​one​ who​ ​has​ ​to​ ​put​ ​in​ ​the​ ​time​ ​and​ ​the​ ​effort​ ​to​ ​make​ ​the​ ​grade.

Role as President of Student Veterans:  The Student Vets club interests me because it allows me to discuss with others the one thing that many haven’t done in their life – join the military. As club president, I’m able to suggest ideas that members can do for either the campus or the community. For example, every fall semester, we hold a toy drive for the Gingerbread House of West Bend that helps families in the area celebrate the holidays.

UW-Washington County is located at 400 S. University Drive in West Bend.  The campus is part of the University of Wisconsin System and offers freshman and sophomore level classes in over 250 majors.
