Several hundred people attended the 72nd annual Washington County Farm Bureau meeting Tuesday evening at The Columbian in West Bend.

Three local students were honored for the Ag in the Classroom essay contest. This year’s topic, “Why are bees important to Wisconsin agriculture?”

Winners included Matthew Wanta from Kennedy Middle School, Kaitlyn Schmelebeck from Allenton Elementary School and Caleb Selness from Allenton Elementary School.

Herb and Sharon Lofy of Richfield were given the Friend of Agriculture Award.

George Muth was given a plaque for serving three years as president of the Farm Bureau Board of Directors and Bill Hinckley was paid tribute for his years as secretary on the board.

I was given the honor of being the guest speaker. I kept it brief and talked about the fundraising tours to benefit Alzheimer’s. It was wonderful…. everybody said so.
