During Monday’s West Bend common council meeting a number of officers were commended for their actions including Dispatcher Heather Corning.

On January 29, 2016, Dispatcher Corning received a phone call from a suicidal subject hiding in the woods behind the Bagg End tavern.

The subject said he had been there for several hours, was armed with a handgun, and had already fired several shots.

For almost 40 minutes, Dispatcher Corning remained compassionate with the subject, distracted him from thinking about harming himself or others, gave specific directions to avoid any misunderstanding, and provided responding officers with the information needed to locate the subject and safely resolve the situation.

Dispatcher Corning’s compassion and professionalism allowed the subject to be taken into protective custody without any injuries to the subject or officers.
