West Bend crossing guard at hospital following 2-car accident at Decorah and 7th Avenue

Sept. 6, 2017 – West Bend, WI – West Bend crossing guard Phyllis Wendt is at St. Joseph’s Hospital this morning following a two-vehicle accident at Seventh Avenue and Decorah Road.

Witnesses say the accident happened about 7:30 a.m. as one vehicle tried to turn and another was coming down Decorah hill. Both vehicles ended up on the front lawn of the home on the southeast corner.

“There was a large white pickup truck and a smaller black car up on the grass,” said Jim Windward of West Bend.

Windward said he drove past the accident just moments after it happened. He said he saw the crossing guard on the ground.

“I can’t believe how horrible that intersection is,” said Windward. “There’s got to be an accident there a week and now with the kids back at school… why isn’t something being done?

Wendt said she jumped out of the way. “If I didn’t see the cars coming… that would have been it,” she said. “You’ve really got to be alert.”

Wendt, 92, said she fell and injured her back.

Wendt’s daughter Marcia Weber is at the hospital with her mom. She said there were kids in one of the vehicles. She did not have any idea if anybody else was injured.

Calls have been placed to West Bend Police, the West Bend Fire Department and the West Bend School District for more information. There’s no word if anybody else was injured.

We’ll bring you more details on Phyllis Wendt’s condition when they become available.

Please keep Phyllis in your prayers.
