Work underway on railroad crossing in Allenton | By Ron Naab

October 29, 2019 – Allenton, WI – Work is underway on the Canadian National Railroad crossing at Highway 33 in Allenton.

The Town of Addison and Washington County Highway Department received numerous complaints about the crossing being hazardous and the noise when crossing was unsettling.   This crossing was repaired in 2014 and Canadian National has had to make repairs since.

Part of the major repair will include a complete removal of the base material, the ties and rails along with the approach from both sides of the track.

Railroads own and are responsible for the track and up to 50 feet on each side.  This crossing was originally scheduled to be done in August.

WI 33 will be closed in Allenton from Monday, October 28 through Friday, Nov. 1.

Washington County Highway Commissioner Scott Schmidt said the detour will follow I-41 south to County Road K, to WI-175 to County Road W.

L & H Gyr Excavating of Fond du Lac is the contractor working with the Canadian National Railroad.

On a side note:

  • A train passed through the construction area at 1:38 p.m. on Monday. Interesting because the contractors are going to be pulling up the track during this repair.
  • On Monday neighbors in Allenton said they could tell the suggested detour was not being followed because there were a number of large trucks driving the side streets through Allenton.
