In-person absentee voting kicks off Monday, Feb. 1.

There’s a school board race on the ballot in West Bend. Slinger has a pair of referendum questions on the Feb. 16 ballot and there’s a state Supreme Court primary.

One other item of note is anyone who wants to vote this spring must have a photo identification with them.

The law was official last year, but wasn’t in place for the spring 2015 elections because of the short time between when the law passed and Election Day.

According to the Government Accountability Board there is NO separate “Voter ID” card. Anyone with a valid Wisconsin driver license or Wisconsin state ID card, or any of the documents listed below already has the photo ID they need for voting purposes.

Here’s how to make sure you have the right ID to vote:

  • No special “voter ID cards” exist. The law did not create new IDs, but required that existing photo IDs be used to vote
  • A Wisconsin DOT-issued driver’s license or ID card, military ID card or a United States passport are accepted for voting
  • Revoked or suspended driver’s licenses are acceptable
  • Expired driver’s licenses are acceptable only if they expired after the last general election, from Nov. 4, 2014
  • Student ID cards from a Wisconsin university or college must have an issue date, signature of student and an expiration date no later than two years after the issue date to be accepted. Students must also have documentation, like a tuition bill, to prove they are enrolled in higher education
  • The address on the ID does not have to be a current address. However, you should bring a bank statement, pay stub, hunting or fishing license, or a utility bill to prove your residency if your current address and the address on the ID do not match
  • If you need a photo ID, free ID cards are available. Head to your local Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and bring an original birth certificate, Social Security card, a utility or cell phone bill to get your free ID.

More information is available at gab.wi.gov and also the myvote.wi.gov.

In-person absentee voting runs through Friday, Feb. 12 at 5 p.m.
