There was a lot of reflective lime green safety gear in attendance at Monday’s West Bend as Mayor Kraig Sadownikow read a proclamation declaring January 11-15, 2016 as Wisconsin Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week. There were nine crossing guards in attendance out of a total of 16 that help safely guide students to school in the morning and get them home in the afternoon.

“West Bend is proud of our school crossing guards and commend them highly for their continued commitment to the safety and well-being of our children,” said Sadownikow.

In other action during Monday’s meeting….

-The common council unanimously approved Mayor Sadownikow’s reappointment of Lauri Gundrum to the Downtown BID Board.

-A $1,000 a month lease agreement was approved between the city and Manitou America to use the closed landfill on Schuster Drive to test its equipment.

-A contract was also approved with O’Meara Law Firm for Legal Counsel Services for the city of West Bend. One change, the council agreed to contract with the law firm using a flat $3,500 monthly fee rather than at a rate of $175 an hour. “Prior to outsourcing our annual legal budget was $225,000 a year,” Sadownikow said. “This is a financial saving to the city and we haven’t felt any internal ramifications since the change.”
-The Board of Public Works also approved $70,000 for a tree surety program which would include instillation of 280 trees with 67 trees designated for 11 subdivisions  and 61 trees that will be part of the city’s Emerald Ash Borer response plan. Those trees will be planted in the area of Silverbrook Drive, Stirling Court and Seventh Avenue. The Free Street Tree program will also add about 152 trees throughout the city.
