VIDEO | First look at new 18th Avenue south of Decorah in West Bend

Sept. 3, 2018 – West Bend, WI – One of the more popular questions this Labor Day weekend was about the construction on 18th Avenue and when it would reopen.

It was April of this year when construction started on 18th Avenue from Vogt Drive to Decorah Road.

According to the city the “project’s intent is to reconstruct 18th Avenue from Vogt Drive to Decorah Road, as well as the intersections of 18th Avenue with Decorah Road and with Vogt Drive; including new pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalk, storm sewer and improved sight distance.”

You’ll see in the video there’s now sidewalk down the entire east and west sides of 18th Avenue.

There are a couple of approaches that still need to be finished as Decorah Road meets 18th Avenue on the east and west side as well as at the bottom of the hill by Vogt Drive across from the Rolf’s Dog Park.

Striping still needs to be put down and there’s a bit of landscaping that needs to finish up. The early projection from the city was to open in the road in mid-October.  We’ll check with city officials on Tuesday to see if they have a date.

Calls have been placed do Dist. 3 alderman Andrew Chevalier for an update as well.

Across town Rolfs Avenue on the east side of West Bend will be open to vehicular traffic between Lang Street and Creek Road somewhere mid to late morning on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018.

This new road extension will provide a connection from Creek Road to Washington Street to replace the section of Schmidt Road that served this junction in the past. ‘

That segment of Schmidt Road is being vacated to revert back to Washington County ownership, and will no longer connect to Washington Street.

Access to the Sheriff Department can be achieved through the driveway provided along Rolfs Avenue.

Until Sept. 7, 2018, motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists are reminded to abide by all traffic control signs and devices as well as be aware of ongoing construction activities. Alternate routes should be planned to avoid construction whenever possible.
