December 4, 2021 – West Bend, WI – Calls have been placed to members of the West Bend School Board regarding an email parents received Saturday, December 4, 2021, regarding student protocols at Silverbrook School this coming Monday, December 6, 2021.
According to the memo from Silverbrook principal Lance Roell, received by parents at 10:25 a.m. Saturday, the school will adhere to a ‘masks on the move’ policy. While the email states it is “a less restrictive mask plan for the week” of December 6-10, parents disagree.
The letter claims the district “will remain in Phase 1 with all eligible students returning to in-person instruction” it also states “the mask in motion protocol” will be followed.
Which means “masks will be required during transitions between classes, to and from lunch, and during small group work time. Masks are optional at recess and required on school buses.”
The letter also states, “distance learning is no longer an option for students.”
Parents say the district is breaking its own standard by requesting Phase 3 requirements in a Phase 1 situation.

One parent said, “should be phase 1 but technically they are enforcing phase 3… with no distance learning option for parents who refuse to muzzle their children.”
So, a virtual option available in Phase 3, is not being offered because the district is currently in Phase 1.
UPDATE: Roell now sent an email at 6:13 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021, stating virtual options are now available, however parents still want to know why a principal is violating the district standard set in place. WBSD operating plan and mitigation measures plan for Phase 1 and Phase 3 are below.
Calls/emails have been placed to Lance Roell, Heather Geldnich, and school board members Paul Fischer, Erin Dove, Chris Zwygart, Joel Ongert, Tonnie Schmidt.
This is a working story, and more details will be posted when information becomes available.
