Winnebago System Sturgeon spawning run | By Ryan Koenigs

April 24, 2019 –  Outagamie Co., WI – The sturgeon are spawning and chasing up the Wolf River. If you’ve never been up north in Shiocton, New London or Shawano to witness the event it’s worth the day trip.  The post and photo below are from Ryan Koenigs Senior Fisheries Biologist / Winnebago System Sturgeon Biologist with the Wisconsin DNR.

Our crew was busy tagging lake sturgeon on the Wolf River today as we handled 124 fish at the Sturgeon Trail in New London and another 16 fish at Bamboo Bend in Shiocton.  We could have tagged more fish at Bamboo Bend, but we had spent most of the day tagging at the Sturgeon Trail in New London.

Today’s assessment included a number of very large fish including a 77-inch female that was captured at the Sturgeon Trail.

I anticipate that fish will still be spawning at these two sites tomorrow, April 24, 2019 and will provide the best viewing opportunity for spectators.

I checked the Shawano Dam this afternoon and there were only a few fish visible below the dam.  This suggests that spawning is likely at least a few days off there.

I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the 2019 sturgeon spawning run.
