Celebration of life to be held May 29, 2025, for Mike Staral

West Bend, Wi – A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, May 29, 2025, for Mike Staral of West Bend, WI, who entered eternal life Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

The community of West Bend, WI lost a great leader this week as Mike Staral died Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Neighbors relayed stories of Staral’s volunteer spirit and commitment to building a better West Bend.
American Construction Services CEO Kraig Sadownikow said Staral took his family legacy of giving back to West Bend very seriously. “He dedicated a lot of time and energy to promoting West Bend in particular, the park system and the Tech College. I can’t remember a time I didn’t see him with a smile on his face. He always had something positive to say and always looked for the good in people.”

Doug Gonring and Craig Larsen from the West Bend Baseball Association remembered Staral’s commitment to the WBBA. “He was a great friend to the West Bend Baseball Association, and an added value when he became one of the members. He’s going to be missed; a great person for the community,” said Gonring.

Larsen’s tribute is below.

The Celebration of Life will be held from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m at Foundry 45, 9480 US Hwy 45 in Kewaskum, WI.

Staral grew up in West Bend, in the area currently home to Meadowbrook Manor. Staral often spoke about fishing in the creek before Silverbrook Drive became a through street and sledding down the hill on 10th Avenue.

Jeff Szukalski said Mike was a pillar of the community. “He was involved in everything as far as Little League, the Police and Fire Commission, and anything that meant anything to the community he got involved with.  He was just a great, great individual. He would help with everything that had to do with the community.”

“Staral started working as a tool maker at Willer Tool.  Willer decided he was a better salesman than he was a tool maker, and he grew that company from just a little garage tool maker to what they are now,” said Szukalski.

Former Washington County Judge Andrew Gonring said Staral was simply a great guy. “He was always upbeat, you know, even knowing what his health situation was. It’s a great loss for West Bend overall. I was always impressed by the way he handled himself.”

Mike
Mike’s legacy is woven into the fabric of West Bend, most notably through his pivotal role in renovating Carl M. Kuss Memorial Field. In 2013, alongside Cathy Lawton and Craig Larsen, Mike helped devise the visionary plan (on a white napkin) in the Fleet Farm parking. He wanted to transform the baseball field into the community treasure it is today.

“Mike showed me what genuine goodness looks like in a world that rarely rewards it. The weight of this loss feels impossibly heavy, not just for what he meant to me, but for what the world has lost, one of the rare people who actually made this world better. Life isn’t fair, but he left a legacy that will live on for a real long time,” said Larsen.
Beyond baseball, Mike served the West Bend community through his dedicated work on the Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Commission and the City Planning Commission. His leadership extended to education as past president of the Moraine Park Technical College Board of Directors.
Those who knew Mike will fondly remember his warm smile as he relaxed and held court in Jeff Szukalski’s office chair at Jeff’s Spirits on Main. As a mentor, his guidance shaped countless lives. His roles as husband, father, and grandfather were the ones he cherished most deeply.
During winter months, Mike could be found in Marco Island, Florida, where he unofficially served as “Mayor” of the local West Bend snowbird community, always sporting what many called “the best winter tan in West Bend.”
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1
As baseball legend Jackie Robinson once said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” Mike Staral’s impact on West Bend was immeasurable, and his memory will continue to inspire us all.
The West Bend Baseball Association extends its deepest condolences to Mike’s family and countless friends during this difficult time.
