Natural gas line explosion forces temporary evacuation in Town of Mitchell | By Sheriff Matt Spence

November 14, 2025 – Town of Mitchell, Wi – On Friday November 14, 2025 at approximately 1:18 p.m. the Sheboygan County Emergency Dispatch Center received several 911 calls in reference to an explosion that occurred on Trio Lane which is in the Town of Mitchell, located in the southwest portion of Sheboygan County. Numerous public safety resources were sent to the area. On arrival of law enforcement discovered that an excavation crew had ruptured a main natural gas line causing a significant explosion.

One member of the excavating crew was transported from the scene with unknown injuries. Residences within the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution. An investigation has been started into how this incident occurred. There is no further information at this time.

At 5:30 p.m. the energies company indicated the scene was safe to approach and continue the investigation. Two houses sustained damage as a result of the incident and will not be habitable this evening.

The fire department is in the process of assessing the gas levels of the houses in the area and providing ventilation where appropriate. Residents are slowly being permitted to return to their houses. Trio Lane will remain closed for the duration of this evening and during this investigation.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department wishes to thank the public for its patience while this incident was stabilized and investigated. Authorities do not believe there is further risk to the community as a result of this incident.

The incident happened after 1 p.m. in the area of County Highway F, just east of Dundee.

Authorities said at least one person was injured and transported to the hospital.

Witnesses said two homes have been burned although the extent of damage is uncertain.

An evacuation of 3 miles is in progress in the area of Trio Lane and County Road F.

Emergency crews are on scene and reportedly going house to house to make sure people leave the area.
