More road construction closures and detours begin today in West Bend & Washington Co.

West Bend, WI – Motorists across West Bend, WI, and Washington County, WI, should buckle in as more road work begins today. Details on some of the projects are below.

The photo above is the intersection work on Highway 33 and River Road. The improvements appear to be similar to what happened on Paradise Drive last year – new, larger traffic signals and some road improvements.

Motorists have been critical of the “improvements” made last year at S. Main Street and Decorah Road. A new, longer island was added which prevents turning into the Decorah Shopping Center and traffic exiting the shopping center is now forced to turn east.

More construction at that intersection is ahead Monday, April 28, 2025, as contractors complete more road repair. The 4-way is expected to remain open during the project but watch for possible delays.

Also, next week, starting May 1, 2025, there’s another project set for Highway 33 in Newburg as resurfacing begins between County Y and 0.5 miles west of N. Poplar Road. That project will run through summer 2025. Click HERE for more details.

In Slinger, watch for road closure on W. Washington Street / STH 175 and Maple Avenue N to Weil Drive from Monday, April 28 – Thursday, May 1, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Alternative routes around this area include Interstate 41 up to Hwy K, or Hwy 60 to Kettle Moraine Road.

West Bend, Wi – Neighbors in West Bend, Wi, who travel Highway 33 are going to need to buckle in and have a Plan B this entire summer as construction at three primary intersections begins Monday, April 21, 2025 …. and it isn’t going to be pretty. The DOT says work will be completed in late October 2025.  More details are below.

Wisconsin government approved a $3.1 million intersection improvement project along WIS 33 (Washington Street), in the city of West Bend, WI.

Intersections Impacted:

This project will make various safety and traffic flow improvements at three intersections along WIS 33 (Washington Street) in the city of West Bend.

The work begins on two intersections first, including WIS 33 and 18th Avenue and WIS 33 and River Road. It won’t be until July 2025 when work starts on Main Street and WIS 33. Calls have been placed to see if that work would interfere with the July 4 parade.

All three intersections currently are marked with orange construction barrels and detour signs – even detour signs on Highway 45. If you exit Hwy 45 and want to go east… the detour signs say north to STH 144. However, West Bend police and the DOT indicate traffic will still be able to get through east to west on Hwy 33 at 18th Avenue.

No word yet how this will impact Johnson Bus, which exits on Hwy 33 near 18th Avenue, as construction begins before the school year ends.

Police are aware motorists near 18th Avenue may try to take shortcuts through business driveways around 18th Avenue like Pizza Ranch / McDonalds / Tommy’s Car Wash or Sendik’s. Police say there is an ordinance to prevent that should it become a problem. We will keep you posted.

Property loss management

East/west roads expected to see considerable traffic increases include Park Avenue, Chestnut Street, Decorah Road, and Paradise Drive.

Improvements Include:

  • Concrete pavement replacement
  • Reconfiguration of turn lanes
  • Traffic signal replacement
  • Concrete curb and gutter, and sidewalk improvements
  • Storm sewer modifications
  • New pavement marking and signing

Traffic Impacts:

East-west access along WIS 33 (Washington Street) will be maintained during construction.

North-south access across WIS 33 (Washington Street) at the intersections will be limited with posted detours.

Access to local businesses and residences will be maintained.

This project is scheduled for completion in fall 2025. All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
