VIDEO | Shopping 21st century farming in the Netherlands

March 8, 2026 – Oldeberkoop, NL – Headed out for a pedal on a sunny morning, through farm fields and over dams and found a small building at the side of a tree-lined rural road. While the feeling was Norman Rockwell, inside the tidy shop it was definitely farming brought to the 21st century.

Inside?

Not a clerk.
Not a farmer.

Vending machines.

But not the soda-and-chips kind. These were stocked with the farm’s own goods.

shop

One door held brown eggs. A dozen ready to go.
Another slot offered long, lanky sausages.
There were wedges of cheese. Thick and golden.

Half-pints of cold white milk.
  Chocolate milk, chilled and waiting.

Fruit too. Oranges. Apples.

You could slide in coins. Or tap a credit card. Touch the number. The little door pops open and your farm-fresh treasure is yours.

Pretty clever… and very Dutch.

But the story didn’t end there.

Just down the road… another surprise.

The farm store itself.

An old-school shop filled with fresh goodness. Carrots stacked bright and orange. Heaps of potatoes still wrapped in a thin shawl of Mother Earth. Shelves of local products from Maple syrup to soups. Simple. Honest. The kind of place that feels like it has been doing things right for generations.

farm

Small. Friendly. Charming.

The vending machines were a modern convenience.

The little store?

Pure countryside soul.

Farm mailbox….

Pedal a few more miles and you realize sometimes the best roadside stop isn’t a café.

Sometimes it’s a farm.

On a side note:

-There are so many unique cultural trends, especially in architecture in the Netherlands. On the peak of the rooftops many homes are decorated with signature twin swans.

The “owlboards” are located north of Amersterdam in what’s called “Frisian territory.” These are called ûleboerden in Frisian or uileborden in Dutch. Research has found the swans carry several meanings including the belief to “ward off evil, and the swan in particular is associated with solar signs and the cycles of life, death, and the seasons.”

Swans Symbol: of eternal faith and love. In addition, they come in Friesland a lot in combination with an Owl sign. This indicates the right of the landowner to keep and trade swans.
