VIDEO | West Bend Noon Rotary celebrates 100 years

West Bend, Wi – A milestone for the West Bend Noon Rotary Club which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The organization which pledges “service above self” has a fantastic history in West Bend, Wi, which included popular events like Seafood Fest, the Fish Boil, and Riverfest, followed by donations to help eradicate polio, scholarships, and providing a solar kitchen to people in Haiti.

The video highlights Seafood Fest and the Bob Cross Run, which joined forces in 1996. Some of the very young Rotarians include Glenn Grothman, Jacci Gambucci, Tom Bast, and John Hafeman. Who else can you identify?

Seafood Fest featured high school choral groups and big band music for dancing. There was trout fishing for kids, craft show vendor booths, Mother Goose story hour, and tokens were needed to purchase food and drink.

Seafood Fest featured huge white tents on N. Main Street at Regner Park. Live lobster shipped in from Maine was served with Russett potatoes, corn on the cob, bibs and plenty of butter.

Noon Rotary preps for shrimp boil
The West Bend Noon Rotary is gearing up for its annual shrimp boil August 14, 2013, at Regner Park. The shrimp boil has been around for 38 years and actually started as a fish boil at Peg and Bernie Ziegler’s place on Scenic Drive.

Some quick facts about that event: Jerry Mehring was the chairman of the inaugural Rotary fish boil. The fish was supplied by Harold Mehring from Mehring’s Fish Market.
Drinks included Manhattans and martinis mixed by the pitcher full. “So, when people ordered they could just pour one instead of mixing each drink separately,” said Mehring.
The very first fish boil was cancelled because of rain but held the next day. Mehring said the big dilemma was all the drinks that were ready to go couldn’t be saved. “We had to dispose of them…. but let’s just say we didn’t throw them on the ground.”
Mehring raved about the food, recalling memories of the taste of the delicious trout and boiled onions. “It was almost like a stewed onion, but it was the whole onion,” said Mehring.
For the first two years the fish boil was held under a red-and-white striped tent at the Ziegler’s and then moved to Ridge Run Park; in 2009 the event switched to Regner Park.

In 1988 the fish boil became a shrimp boil. “Some of the higher ups felt people really didn’t care for fish as much and maybe shrimp would be more attractive,” said Mehring.
Tickets were $15 and the menu includes shrimp, corn on the cob, red potatoes, salad, roll, butter, coffee and dessert.  The Bar opened from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dinner was served from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and there was music from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Alexssa, 301 N. Main St., from any Rotary member or by calling Jerry Mehring at 262-338-0413.

A tidbit from the Around the Bend column from April 29, 2014.

In 2014, due to a lack of volunteers, the Rotary changed the name of Seafood Fest to Riverfest. In April 2014 the Rotary held its monthly meeting at Jumbo’s and owner Jeff Kern gave a little speech but got tongue tied when he initially referred to the festival as the old Seafood Fest then over corrected to Riverfest and ended up saying Reefer Fest. That comment was met with a lot of wide-eyed senior Rotarians.  Younger Rotarians thought if they hosted that sort of event, they would crush previous attendance records and ‘no doubt’ everyone would have a good time.
