Action on Merten postponed and County invests in economic impact analysis

Washington County

Oct. 25, 2016 – West Bend, WI – It was a world record for the shortest Washington County Board meeting ever.  On Tuesday morning, within a brief nine minutes the board failed to act on a ‘no confidence’ vote for County Treasurer Jane Merten.

The item was stripped from the agenda after the language in the resolution was found to be incomplete.

The resolution, presented by Dist. 21 Supervisor Donald Kriefall, stems from a pair of wire transfers that occurred June 1, 2016 when Merten sent two separate wire transfers to fraudulent accounts. The total was $87,760, although the Washington County Sheriff said half of that never went through.

The item is expected to be added to next month’s full county board agenda.

In the Executive Committee meeting that followed supervisors agreed to ask the city of Hartford to fund a $17,000 economic impact analysis on Alternative No. 11 for the Highway 60 reliever route; that alternative route would run north of Highway 60 to County Highway K.

District 17 Supervisor Timothy C. Michalak, who is also the mayor of Hartford, proposed the city of Hartford cover the cost of the analysis which would be completed by UW-Whitewater.

The committee agreed if Hartford declined to cover the expense the cost of the analysis would come out of the general fund.

An update will be presented at the next meeting.
