Letter to the Editor | Artificial Intelligence has no place in West Bend schools | By Bill Schulz

May 24, 2022 – West Bend, WI – Artificial Intelligence or “AI” is defined as, “the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.” Let’s think about that for a second.
Letter to the artificial
It can be interpreted in many different ways but how I interpret it is that students are being taught by computers, not teachers, even though the West Bend School District (WBSD) administration has ensured that is not how this technology will be used, such as Amira, which is a tutoring tool.
So, I ask, if you’re not going to use this technology for its intended use, then why bother using it? That is no different than me driving my semi-truck as an everyday grocery-getter, or anybody that owns a sedan to haul their boat.
I’m concerned about the implementation of this new Artificial Intelligence as these companies are funded by big tech companies and that the data collected from our children might get into the wrong hands, or that they may be forced to learn a part of a curriculum that may not have been approved.
If we have learned anything from Covid, and trust me, I cannot stand to bring that word up but I must say it, it’s that our children learn best from face to face, person to person, and teacher-to-student learning. Voting yes very well WOULD take some of that much-needed one-on-one time away.
I hope you’ve all done the research to understand that Artificial Intelligence has no room in the West Bend School District.
