Engine 1, Tower 1, and Battalion 1 responded. A working still was paged on Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) box 15-1-1. Off-duty personnel responded to their assigned stations. Engine 3, Med 31, and Med 11 responded along with a fire engine and chief officer from the Jackson Fire Department. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find that all of the occupants of the home were outside and accounted for. The fire in the second-floor bedroom was rapidly extinguished by firefighters on scene. Firefighters found the remains of a burned and melted tower fan.

The homeowners reported hearing smoke alarms in the home, which alerted the residents to the fire. The parents were able to wake and rescue their child who was sleeping in the room at the time of the fire. The residents did try to extinguish the burning fan with water.

Firefighters noted that the circuit breaker to the outlet where the fan was plugged in had tripped. The fan was described as a 3-foot, non-oscillating tower fan, and air purifier that was purchased approximately 7 years prior.

The West Bend Fire Department would like to reiterate that working smoke alarms save lives. This is another example where lives were saved with minimal injuries and limited property damage because of working smoke alarms. Just a reminder that the current recommendations
and requirements for smoke alarms are:
• Inside each sleeping area
Outside each sleeping area
• Every level of the home
