Germantown School District Board of Education President Russell Ewert has issued the following statement.

At its June 23, 2026, meeting, the Germantown Board of Education appointed Teaching and Learning Director Jake Misiak and Human Resources Director Martin Castro to continue serving as interim co-superintendents for the 2026-27 school year. Both have served in this leadership capacity since April. The board thanks Mr. Misiak and Dr. Castro for their willingness to serve the Germantown community and for the leadership they have provided since April and will continue to provide during this period of transition.

In collaboration, the Board, Mr. Misiak and Dr. Castro came to the joint agreement that maintaining this structure will provide stability, continuity, and consistent leadership for students, families, staff, and the community.

The Board has directed the administrative team to issue a Request for Proposal for a search firm to support the search for the next permanent superintendent of the Germantown School District. This important strategic effort will include opportunities for input from families, staff, and community members and is expected to take several months. Additional information about the process will be shared as it becomes available.

We appreciate the continued support of our families, staff, and community members as we move forward together.”

At its meeting on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the Germantown School Board also approved Dr. Dan Unertl as the new Rockfield Elementary School principal, effective July 1, 2026.

Dr. Unertl returns to the Germantown School District, where he previously taught at Germantown High School. Most recently, Dr. Unertl served as an attorney supporting school districts. Prior to that, he spent nearly 12 years in Oak Creek, including the last four and a half years as superintendent.

“Dr. Unertl has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and a student-centered approach,” said Dr. Martin Castro, human resources director and co-interim superintendent. “As a former educator in our district, Dan understands our community and its values. We are confident he will build upon the strong foundation at Rockfield Elementary School and lead the school toward continued success.”

Dr. Unertl emerged as a top candidate through our district’s selection process, which included input from district shareholders and representatives.

“One of Dan’s greatest strengths is his ability to bring people together around a shared vision for student success,” said Jake Misak, teaching and learning director and co-interim superintendent. “Throughout Dan’s career, Dan has earned the trust and respect of colleagues, families, and students.”

We appreciate the feedback from families, staff, and community members on the qualities sought in Rockfield’s next leader, as well as the representatives who dedicated their time to the interview process.

We look forward to welcoming Dr. Unertl and providing opportunities for families, students, and staff to meet their new principal.
