Germantown Police Officer finishes out nearly 30-year law enforcement career | By Chief Michael S. Snow

October 9, 2023 – Washington County, WI – Saturday, October 7, 2023, marked the last day of a very distinguished career in law enforcement for Lt. Dave Huesemann. Lt. Huesemann began his career with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in April of 1994. After several years with the department, he was hired by the Germantown Police Department (GTPD) on September 18, 1998.

Over the years, Lt. Huesemann served many roles with the Germantown Police Department. His police career started as a patrol officer. During that time, he worked part-time as an Investigator with the Washington County Metro Drug Unit. He was appointed as a Youth Aid Officer in February of 2000 where he specialized in investigating crimes against children and those where the suspect was a juvenile. These investigations required unique skills and the ability to connect with children. Lt. Huesemann excelled in this role.

During that time, he served the Germantown School District as a DARE Officer. He also led the Germantown Explorer Post. The Explorer Post was open to anyone between the ages of 14-20 who wanted to learn more about law enforcement. Several of our Explorers have gone on to become sworn officers with other agencies.

It should be noted, that Lt. Huesemann rose to the rank of Lieutenant faster than any officer in the history of the department. In August of 2002, Lt Huesemann was promoted to Sergeant. While working full-time, Lt. Huesemann earned his Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. In 2004, he was promoted to Lieutenant.
Lt. Huesemann’s role as a K9 handler, supervisor, and ultimately the person in charge of the K9 program, cannot be overstated. The K9 unit at the GTPD is largely funded through donations by the community. As such, getting approval for a K9 unit in 2004 was an easy sell. The real work started when it came time to coordinate fundraising, develop policies, select the K9, implement procedures, and the list goes on. This is where Lt. Huesemann played a vital role in the success of the program. Lt. Huesemann volunteered for this responsibility and spent countless hours researching K9 programs, making presentations, and compiling reports.
Lt. Huesman served as a handler for many years with his partner Rambo, before overseeing the entire program. When you think of the K9 program at the Germantown Police Department understand it only exists today due to the guidance and commitment of Lt. Huesemann.
Lt. Huesemann was equally important to the School Resource Officer (SRO) position. He completed a report for the Germantown School Board and made presentations outlining the justifications for the program. He researched other SRO programs and made recommendations for policies and procedures. Again, the success of the program is largely due to his efforts.
Lt. Huesemann’s personnel file is filled with letters of appreciation from schools, businesses, civic organizations, and citizens, thanking him for his contributions, dedication, and sacrifices to their cause. His years of service to the community and to this police department are greatly appreciated.
I pray God watches over Dave and his family and guides them in all they do.
