Jack Russell Memorial Library celebrates anniversary of lunar landing | By Samantha Sali

Hartford, WI – The Jack Russell Memorial Library (JRML), 100 Park Avenue, Hartford, WI, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing with a special free family movie event Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 10 a.m.

The library will be playing the new Apollo 11 movie, which was released earlier this year, in the Community Room. The film features archived footage of the landing, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin. The library will also be handing out a special treat of Moon Pies to attendees.

JRML librarian, Nancy Enderle, organized the event. “Because it is the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing, we thought we should do something special,” she said. “When you think about it, anybody that is younger than 50 years old wasn’t even alive. It’s neat to see that history and have it presented to younger people and it’s such an important event for mankind.”

The anniversary of the landing fits nicely with the library’s Youth Summer Learning Challenge theme, A Universe of Stories, which is about space. Enderle shared that she watched the Apollo 11 a few weeks ago and it has never-before-seen footage.

“It’s very cool,” Enderle said. “I was born in 1955 and what I remember of the lunar landing was that I was a freshman in West Bend, went into my history class, looked at the huge bulletin board that was there, and said, ‘Did we land on the moon?’ It went way over my head. Maybe that’s why I think it’s important to celebrate the event now and make sure the younger generation knows about it.”

The event is free to the public, all ages are welcome, and you can bring your own snacks for the movie.

The JRML features many films for their “Movies for Grownups” program, titles hand-picked by staff. Movies are shown Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. and Fridays at 12:30 p.m.

August 1 & 2 – Dead Poet’s Society
