Names released in Dodge County fatal

More details are being released in connection with the fatal accident Wednesday morning in neighboring Dodge County.

Authorities say Charles Bate, 66, of Appleton was killed when his southbound semi struck a tanker trailer on I-41 just north of State Highway 49 in the Township of Lomira.

The accident happened at 2:13 a.m. as Anthony Cappello, 26, of Chicago, Illinois was operating a semi with tank trailer and initiated a U-turn through the median to travel south on I-41.

Bate struck the tank trailer as it crossed into the southbound traffic lanes.

Cappello was uninjured in the crash, but Bate was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dodge County Medical Examiner. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

I-41 southbound traffic was closed for more than six hours while the crash was being investigated.

Assisting at the scene was Fond du lac County Sheriff’s Department, Fond du lac Paramedics, Brownsville Fire Department and Dodge County Emergency Response Team.

The crash remains under investigation.
