May 4, 2026 – Town of Trenton, Wi – Michael James Lane, 75, passed away unexpectedly on April 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, strength, and a deep love for both his family and the outdoors.

Born on May 19, 1950, to Delue Lane and Mildred Lane (Pearce), Mike found his connection to nature early in life. After losing his father at a young age, the outdoors became more than a pastime. It became his place of peace, grounding, and lifelong purpose.
Mike lived a life marked by quiet courage and noble service. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Guam during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he continued answering the call to serve as a forest firefighter in California, battling the Santa Ana winds. During that time, his love for the outdoors deepened, stretching from trout streams to the Pacific Ocean, where he discovered a passion for surfing.
He eventually returned home to Wisconsin, where he enrolled in the Milwaukee Police Academy and began what would become a 31-year career with the Menomonee Falls Police Department in 1977. Throughout his career, Mike worked across patrol, community service, tactical squad, juvenile detective, investigative services, and the traffic unit.
He served as a certified tactical training officer and firearms instructor and was a member of the board of directors for the Association of SWAT Personnel. Even in retirement, Mike never slowed down. He continued protecting and serving through boat patrol on Lake Okauchee in Oconomowoc and Big Cedar Lake in West Bend. He was respected by colleagues and community members alike, known as a steady presence, a brave man, and someone who led with a true heart of service.
Beyond his career, Mike’s greatest pride was his family. He married the love of his life, Gail Dewey, on May 11, 1985, and together they built a life rooted in love, adventure, and the outdoors. They welcomed their daughter, Candice, in October 1988, and as a family spent years camping, fishing, and exploring together.
In recent years, Mike found deep joy at their cabin in Iron River, Michigan. Days were spent fishing new lakes, casting lines into the Brule River, and walking the quiet woods. He lived and breathed the outdoors, finding purpose in everything from deer, turkey, elk, and bear hunting to the companionship of his five beloved hunting dogs.
But perhaps his most cherished role was becoming “Grandpa.” Mike welcomed his grandson Bennett with his whole heart. Their bond was built on trout fishing trips, long drives together, and a few too many shared pieces of candy when mom wasn’t looking. He was meant to be a grandfather, and those moments will live on forever.
To know Mike was to know someone who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. He was a loyal friend, a devoted husband, and a man deeply committed to his faith in Jesus Christ.
Michael is survived by his wife, Gail (Dewey); his daughter, Candice (Chris) Olson; his grandson, Bennett; and his niece, Katy Hamdan. He is reunited in peace with his parents and his late sister, Sharon Mathers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Michael on Saturday, May 9,2026 , 12 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg. Visitation will be from 9 – 11:45 a.m. Full Military Honors and Luncheon will follow Mass.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the Newburg Fire & Rescue Department, West Bend Fire Department, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and the kind Good Samaritans who were present at the time of his passing.
