Madison, WI — The Wisconsin State Assembly welcomed first responders, families, and friends from across the state to the Capitol this week to celebrate the 2025 First Responders of the Year.
Each year, the First Responder of the Year Award recognizes courageous police officers,
firefighters, EMS personnel, and sheriff’s deputies who go above and beyond in service
to their communities.
Created in 2019, this statewide program highlights the heroism and
dedication of Wisconsin’s first responders, with honorees from every legislative district
recognized for their extraordinary service and sacrifice.
Representative Dan Knodl (R–Germantown) proudly honored Officer Matthew Curran of
the Menomonee Falls Police Department as the 24th Assembly District’s First Responder
of the Year. Officer Curran was nominated by citizens from across the district for his
selfless service and exceptional professionalism.
On August 11, 2025, Officer Curran responded to an emergency at Lime Kiln Park,
where two individuals were swept into the Menomonee River during dangerous flood
conditions. Without hesitation, Officer Curran entered the surging waters, risking his own
life to rescue one of the individuals being carried downstream. With the assistance of
fellow officers, victims were brought safely to shore, where lifesaving measures were
administered.
“Officer Curran’s actions exemplify courage, quick thinking, and dedication to the safety
of others,” said Rep. Knodl. “Without his heroic intervention, there was a high likelihood
of tragedy. His bravery and professionalism reflect the very best of Wisconsin’s first
responders.”
Rep. Knodl also extended his gratitude to Officer Curran’s family: “I want to thank
Matt’s wife, Sam, who serves the community through her work in education, and his parents, Dave and Eileen, for their support. Our first responders couldn’t do this
challenging work without the love and strength of their families.”
Knodl said, “It is an honor to celebrate Officer Curran and all first responders who
protect our communities each and every day. Their service and sacrifice make Wisconsin
a safer and stronger place to live.”
