West Bend, WI – Spring is right around the corner, which means it’s the time Witte’s Vegetable Market starts planting items such as onions, leek, and root celery on the farm.
Each of these vegetables will spend the next 2 1/2 months growing in the greenhouse until they are suitable for transplanting to the field in early May.

The onions and leek will then spend the next 3-4 months growing in the field until ready for harvest. However, root celery takes much longer and won’t be harvested until October, which is nearly 9 months after it was seeded.

For those interested in possibly growing their own onions this season, look for suitable varieties for our northern climate. One of their favorites is “Candy.”
It is a sweet onion they’ve grown on their farm for years and continues to be a hit with all their customers.
