Obituary | Rev. Allan Sommer, 80, of West Bend

March 17, 2020 – West Bend, WI – Rev. Allan Sommer, 80, of West Bend died on Monday, March 16, 2020 at New Perspective Senior Living complex.  He was born on August 19, 1939 in Milwaukee to the late Leonard and Lillian (nee Raddatz) Sommer.

 

He began his priestly formation at St. Francis de Sales Minor Seminary in 1957, and completed his formation for the priesthood at St. Francis de Sales Major Seminary during the period of 1959-1966.  He was ordained to the priesthood by Most Reverend William Cousins, Archbishop of Milwaukee, on May 28, 1966, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Milwaukee.

Reverend Sommer was appointed to his first assignment in July 6, 1966, to serve at St. Philip Neri Parish, Milwaukee, as curate, and on June 18, 1974, he was appointed associate pastor at St. Louis Parish, Caledonia.  Rev. was appointed to his first pastorate on July 6, 1984, to serve St. Patrick Parish, Racine, having been appointed 16 days earlier, on June 19, 1984, to serve as administrator for St. Patrick’s.  On November 14, 1995, he was appointed pastor at St. Mary Parish, Port Washington, and on June 19, 2007, was appointed pastor at St. Bernadette Parish, Milwaukee.  Rev. Sommer retired from active ministry on June 20, 2011.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, 1 sister-in-law Mary Lou Sommer, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and her husband, Genevieve and Roy Prey, and his two brothers Leonard, Jr. and Ronald and his wife Fran.

Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, his Mass of Christian Burial will be private.  Burial will be in Holy Angels Cemetery, West Bend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association are appreciated.
