Strong defense gives UW-WC an edge over UW-Marinette

Nov. 14, 2016 – West Bend, WI – The high-energy, swarming team defense of the UW-Washington County mens basketball team held UW-Marinette,  to a season scoring low in an 82-67 Wildcats victory at Marinette Saturday.

The win places the Wildcats in a three-way tie for first place in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference with a 2-0 league record, and 2-2 overall.

UW-WC had a season high 20 steals and 20 assists as a team.  Five players scored in double figures for the Wildcats who return to action Monday night at home versus Fox Valley Tech, then travel to UW-Fond du Lac Wednesday before an 11 day break between games.

The Wildcats top defensive player Randy Howard played extremely tough on Marinette’s best scorer before leaving the game late in the first half with a sprained ankle.

Javon Williams took over against the Buccaneers leading scorer in the second half and kept him mostly quiet.  Williams added 3 assists.

Shaun Fischer had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Evan Rathke led all scorers in the game with 21 points, and added 5 steals.

Dre Johnson connected on 8 out of his 10 shots and finished with 18 points.

Aaron Rathke hit 3-5 from behind the arc and dished out 5 assists while scoring 13 points.

Freshman Derrick Chaney tossed in 10 points and 3 assists without any turnovers.
