Hartford Rotary names Students of the Month for April | By Ron Schlitt

May 2, 2019 – Hartford, WI – The Hartford Rotary Club and Hartford Union High School are pleased to announce Katarina Derse, Joseph Huber, and Marley Kreger were honored recently as Rotary Students of the Month.

The students were given special recognition for their accomplishments at the Hartford Rotary Club’s Thursday noon meetings during the month of April.

Katarina Derse is the daughter of Sally and Dirk Derse.  Derse is a member of National Honor Society, the H-Club, and has served on the HUHS Student Council all four years.  She participated in girls tennis during her freshman and sophomore years and has been a member of the girls track and field team all four years.  Derse pole vaults and runs relays and was selected team captain both her junior and senior year.  She also was a state qualifier in the “We the People” competition, received a Silver Key Award in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition, and received an AP Scholar Award.

Derse has given back to her community by participating in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing campaign, the annual H-Club Toys for Tots drive, the HUHS Shamrock Shuffle, the Fun Fair at Lincoln School, and Fitness Fridays at Erin School. 

Derse plans to attend UW-Madison in the fall to major in Computer Science.

Joseph Huber is the son of Cathy and Tom Huber.  Huber is a member of the varsity track team, a 3 year member of the HUHS Concert Choir, and a 4 year cast member of the HUHS Fall Musicals held at the Schauer Arts and Activities Center.  He was also a cast member in the Hartford Player’s production of “Beauty and the Beast”.  Huber was selected to perform with the WSMA State Honors Choir in 2017 and 2018.  His Barbershop Quartet was given an Exemplary Performance Award at the 2018 State Solo and Ensemble Festival. 

In the fall, Huber plans to attend UW-Platteville to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Marley Kreger is the daughter of Lisa and Doug Kreger.  Kreger is a member of FBLA/DECA, the National Honor Society, the H-Club, the HUHS Student Council, the Mock Trial team, and Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper.  She participated in girls track and field from 2015-17 and was a member of the girls tennis team all four years, earning varsity letters during her junior and senior year.  Kreger was named the ACTE Outstanding Business Student in the Midwest in 2018.  She served as FBLA Region VI Vice-President in 2017-18 and FBLA Region VI President in 2018-19.

Kreger has given back to her community by volunteering her time at Project Linus Blanket Making, the March of Dimes Premature Birth Awareness and Fundraising Campaign, the annual H-Club Toys for Tots drive, and the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Campaign. 

 Kreger will be attending UW-Madison in the fall to pursue a degree in either International Business or Marketing Management.
