VIDEO | Did she stay or did she go at Shalom Wildlife

December 24, 2020 – West Bend, WI – On December 7, 2020, a story was posted at WashingtonCountyInsider.com about a pair of mute swans at Shalom Wildlife, 1901 Shalom Drive.

The dilema was the male mute swan had been pinioned and was not able to fly.  His female friend tried to coax him multiple times but to no avail. The question was, come winter would she fly south or would she stay with her handsome friend?

Mute swans’ mate for life.

The female swan wants to continue her migration to a warmer climate. She wants her sweetheart to join her, but he cannot fly.

She takes to the air circles around and then lands back on the ice near him, confused on why he won’t follow. She has been doing this for three days now.

The female swan knows if she stays there will be trouble, because soon there will be no more open water on the lake. If she leaves, I know her trouble will double if and when she is found on public water during her migration.

Will she stay or will she go now?

During Christmas week, December 23, we paid a visit to Shalom to check on the status of the white swans and we found one gliding amidst a gaggle of geese.

A check around the bend of Ehne Lake finds the female alone and preening, like she’s off to the beauty shop for an appointment and her male friend kills time walking the mall.
Zoo owner David Fechter said, “With the mild weather the lake is still open and she remains with him. We are feeding them daily. She is losing her fear of humans, hunger will do that. At this point I would say she’ll stay.”
