March 26, 2020 – West Bend, WI – Due to an elevated increase in the volume of disinfectant wipes used during the COVID-19 outbreak, the City of West Bend Sewer Utility is reminding residents that only human waste and toilet paper be flushed down toilets. Disposable wipes, facial tissue and paper towels can cause issues in the sewer laterals, sanitary sewer mains, and Wastewater Treatment Plant. This advisory will help protect individual private sewer lines as well as the sanitary sewer system.
Even if a product is labeled “flushable,” it should not be flushed unless it is toilet paper. Here’s a list of a few other items that should always be disposed of in a trash receptacle:
- Diapers (including cloth, cotton, disposable or plastic)
- Flushable, disposable, cleaning or baby wipes
- Paper towels, cloth towels or any type of rag
- Feminine hygiene products
- Facial tissues
If you have any questions regarding the information above, please contact Steve Randall, Sewer Utility Superintendent, at 262-334-3925 or wbsewer@ci.west-bend.wi.us.
The public is highly encouraged to avoid visiting the City Hall and the Water Utility/Public Works Municipal Building until further notice. Please call or email at this time. The City of West Bend is taking these precautions to protect the health and safety of the public and our staff. The City will continue to follow recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Wisconsin Health Services Department. Residents will be notified of any changes to these temporary restrictions.
