GUEST EDITORIAL | Forward – at what price? | By Jerome Zelenka

Farmington, WI – Forward is Wisconsin’s motto, emblazoned right on top of the State Flag symbolizing the desire to forever to be moving forward. But the question is at what price?

Guest editorial

From the very beginning there has been a push to industrialize Wisconsin, the flag shows emblems of mining, industry, shipping and farming. Southeast Wisconsin was once covered with forests, oak, pine and birch trees, so thick they were considered a problem and within years of Wisconsin becoming a state in 1848 they were quickly cut down and sold to make room for progress.

Fortunately for many the fields and forests, especially in Washington and Ozaukee Co. have been allowed to grow back, as many of our Calanders, road maps and advertisements proudly display. Unfortunately, though for some they are again just a nuisance, a problem standing in the way of progress, from moving FORWARD.

Wisconsin power companies, and ATC now want to clear cut and plow under dozens of miles of woods and rolling fields, miles run thru the scenic Kettle Moraine, still more require plowing and clear cutting along and across the Milwaukee River. Leaving a 150 ft scar for miles across the landscape.

It leaves us wondering if there isn’t a better way to “move forward” than this? Can the cables be buried, can they use existing paths already cleared?

Has there been an environmental impact study done on the incredible damage this project will cause to the rivers, streams, wetlands and wildlife including a bald eagle nest close to the proposed route, all of which could be destroyed due to this project?

Is there no other way to accomplish this project other than laying bare the land, digging hundreds of huge 60-foot-deep concrete pilings and erecting 70-foot rust colored iron towers to dominate the landscape instead of tree Like something out of Lord of the Rings?

Have those questions even been asked, by whom and what were the answers? We just don’t know.

We understand the need to move forward, the question is at what price, who will have to pay it and when will we be told?
