Letter to the Editor | West Bend School Board reviewing nepotism policy | By Sue Kellom

February 13, 2023West Bend, Wi – The West Bend School District administration is trying to get our School Board to eliminate its policy 511.1 on nepotism. While the policy doesn’t prohibit relatives from being hired, it does ensure that favoritism is avoided by prohibiting family members from participating in hiring, firing, promoting, etc., their relative as defined in the policy.
Letter to the Editor west
This also aids in helping us hire the most qualified candidates and avoiding lawsuits, since what you know should matter more than who you know.
Moreover, the nepotism policy affects school board members by prohibiting those who have relatives working for the school district from voting on anything that could be considered a conflict of interest.
That would include compensation, promotions, new resources and curriculum, controversial issues, discipline, and the list goes on.
I would even think that the school board member who has a family member working for the school district would not be able to participate on any of the school board committees which are curriculum, finance, and policy, because those committees would be in direct conflict of interest.
School district employees have the administration and/or the teachers’ union as additional representation. Other stakeholders such as families and taxpayers only have the school board for representation. That is why it is important to keep this policy.
Please tell the West Bend School Board and administration that you want the school board policy on nepotism to remain as written. The vote is on Monday, February 20, so time is of the essence.
