Rain turned to snow while I was hiking the Ahnapee State Trail so I made a detour into the small town of Forestville. I took shelter at the Bullpen Bar and Grill and enjoyed a bowl of chili while the traditional Monday morning card game was underway down the bar from me.

Reminders of Wisconsin’s long agricultural history dot the landscape along the Ice Age Trail.

Each set of weathered buildings you pass, like this abandoned farm in Door County, marks the spot where a family once dedicated their lives to working the land surrounding the farmstead.

The maritime history of Sturgeon Bay is immediately apparent as the Ice Age Trail enters town.

Shipyards, marinas, and tugboats dot the shoreline of this active Lake Michigan port in Sturgeon Bay, WI.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: I’m a photojournalist, and I set out to tell the story of Wisconsin’s landscapes, communities, and people by backpacking the nearly 1200-mile-long Ice Age National Scenic Trail with my photography. My book chronicles my journey as I explored Wisconsin on foot.

ABOUT THE BOOK: On the trail, I followed my curiosity and photographed what intrigued me. Of course, there are scenic photos, but as a photojournalist, I also photographed the people and places that interested me. The book is an eclectic collection of photographs, but any journey as epic as hiking across an entire state is bound to be composed of a wide range of unique, eclectic, experiences.
