September 28, 2022 – Washington Co., WI – Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is NOT trying to “take away” anyone’s Social Security (SSI); he is trying to SAVE it.

The fact is, moving SSI into discretionary rather than mandatory (auto-pilot) spending in the budget will force Congress to recognize that the Social Security Trust Fund is going bankrupt. Currently, the SSI Trust Fund automatically makes payments with no necessity for Congress to recognize that the fund reserves will be depleted over the next 12 years. Out of sight, out of mind!

According to information from the SSI website, the trustees report that: “The hypothetical combined OASI [Social Security & Medicare] and DI [Disability] funds would be able to pay scheduled benefits on a timely basis until 2034…. At that time, the combined funds’ reserves will become depleted and continuing tax income will be sufficient to pay 80 percent of scheduled benefits.”
In other words, once the fund reserves are depleted, income to the trust from current workers and their employers (each pays half of the tax) will only be sufficient to pay 80% of what is currently owed.
Without some intervention by Congress (which Sen. Johnson is pushing), such as adjusted retirement ages for future retirees, increased worker and employer tax rates, and/or some kind of funding by Congress, benefits available to CURRENT recipients will decrease substantially! Senator Ron Johnson does not believe that those who are currently retired or disabled can afford to take a 20% cut in benefits in 12 years.
And yet, Senator Ron Johnson is being demonized in the media and via political ads for attempting to get Congress to acknowledge the cliff toward which our senior citizens and disabled persons are headed.
Let’s keep Senator Ron Johnson in the U.S. Senate so he can continue to push for the much-needed reforms to Social Security before it is too late.
