Town of Barton, Wi – One of the remaining small, hometown diners in Washington County, Wi is for sale. Listing of Sandy’s Barton Cafe, 1735 Barton Ave., is courtesy Boss Realty, LLC.
The simple red brick building on Barton Avenue was an appliance store and the Winter girls Barton Baker Shop, long before Sandy Schmidt opened Sandy’s Barton Cafe and made it a landmark. The cafe is the hub of the community. Regulars sit at the counter and the board of directors has the long table on the far side of the room. The layout has enough seating for busy mornings. Waitresses slide between tables pouring refills of hot coffee. There’s the sound of sizzle from the grill, the bark of “order up,” and the general rumble of conversations mixed with laughter. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable as grandma’s kitchen.
Sandy held down the diner for years. She likely served a million eggs over easy, popped the leavers on the toaster another million times, and greeted customers with a smile on the daily. Neighbors in the community stepped up when life threw in a couple curves. The assistance helped Sandy keep family first.
Within the past three years Sandy passed the baton to Jamie Jandre, who earlier this week explained in a post on social media, “I have decided to sell Sandy’s. After 3 years of trying to get Sandy some help to relieve some of her stress and failing, I have made the decision to sell to someone that has the time to give that they all deserve. Anyone that knows Sandy, knows she more than deserves the relief! I did not expect the bakery to take off the way it did and it has left me with no time to help at Sandy’s and they very much need and deserve help. I know that change is hard, but we will be looking for the right fit to keep the iconic diner alive! This was a very difficult decision to make, but is in the best interest of everyone. They deserve much more than I am able to give them. I have no intentions of closing!! I just wanted everyone to know what is going on straight from the source instead of finding out via rumors.”
