Slinger falls to Hartford in annual Coaches vs. Cancer matchup | By Delaney Braun

Slinger, WI – The Slinger Owls fell to the Hartford Orioles 28-21 on Friday, October 7, 2022. This is the “game of the year” for both teams as a historic school rivalry comes together for its annual Coaches vs. Cancer celebration in which each school raises money for breast cancer awareness.

The stands from both sides of the field was a sea of pink in support of impacted community members.

The game started rough for the Owls with a touchdown from the Orioles at 11:21 in the first quarter putting them up 7-0.

Shortly after, Slinger junior Mark Leidel received a 31-yard pass from senior quarterback Tanner Hora at 0:59 tying the game 7-7. The second quarter ended with a field goal from Hartford putting them up 10-7.

At 10:57 in the third quarter, Slinger senior Avery Kurth received an astounding 67-yard pass from Hora. Another touchdown was scored by Kurth, putting the Owls up 21-10 at the end of the third.

Slinger’s defense and offense worked hard but wasn’t able to keep up with Hartford’s aggressive run offense, especially near the end of the game.

In the fourth quarter, a touchdown and a field goal was scored by Hartford to tie it 21-21 with 3 minutes left in the game.

Tensions rose as the game was close with little time remaining. Slinger’s offense wasn’t able to execute as Hartford scored on a 25-yard Interception return to win the game 21-28.

Kurth was able to put up the numbers with 132 passing yards and 107 rushing yards. Hora went 10/21 and 196 yards. Defensively, Slinger senior Luke German played well and was able to get through Hartford’s offensive line to achieve a sack against Hartford quarterback Austin Kutz.

Next week, Slinger faces West Bend East in their last regular season game of the year at home at 7 p.m.
