May 18, 2021 – West Bend, WI – About 35 volunteers stepped up over the weekend to help members of the American Legion Post 36 of West Bend observe Armed Forces Day by placing over 5,000 flags on veterans graves at cemeteries throughout the county.

Veteran Terry Vrana worked with volunteers at Washington County Memorial Park.
Chris Schatz from the American Legion helped about a dozen people plant flags at Holy Angels Cemetery.
“Every year we place flag at cemeteries in West Bend and we set up the flags for Memorial Day and pay our respects to those who have fought for our freedoms,” said Schatz.

Getting students involved, according to Schatz, is designed so they can have a better understanding of history and respect for veterans and the country’s freedom.

Faith Kreuser volunteered with her friends Taylor Franklin and Meaghan Klassy; they were all part of the same Girl Scout Troop. “We knew they were in need of volunteers,” she said. “We wanted to complete our journey and thought why not do it here. This is pretty fun.”
