Washington Co., WI – The Trail Sharks’ mountain bike season’s end is fast approaching. The fourth NICA weekend race/festival weekend was held at Camp Tesomas in Rhinelander this past weekend.
It was another full league event, but this time there were just over 850 registered athletes participating in the race on Sunday, October 5. The Trail Sharks had 22 athletes representing the team with two athletes taking the podium – Gracelyn Beimborn and Jaiden Schumacher.
The racecourse is set throughout the Camp Tesomas grounds and included new as well as reworked trails for the race. The athletes had some bigger hills to climb, making it challenging. The 3 and 4-lap riders’ course had a beautiful trail section overlooking Crystal Lake.
Fall weather was evading everyone despite the leaves turning color and looking like fall.
Once again, this race season the athletes had to deal with rising temperatures throughout the weekend – quite the opposite weather from last year when everyone was bundled up in heavy coats and gloves.
In addition to the heat, the athletes also had to deal with super dusty trails due to the lack of rain and the sandy terrain. Several athletes had mechanical issues during their races, but thankfully they were all able to finish.
One can only assume that the problems were caused by the mischievous Hodag, hiding out in the woods, raising havoc when athletes weren’t looking.
Their final festival weekend will be October 18-19 with the State Championship race on Sunday at Trek Trails in Waterloo.
