Bernie Newman announces candidacy for 58th Assembly District | By Nolan Jackett

April 22, 2026 – West Bend, Wi – Bernie Newman of West Bend, Wi, has announced his candidacy for the Wisconsin State Assembly in District 58, launching a campaign focused on government integrity, responsible spending, and public safety.

Newman said he is running to help restore public trust in government, pointing to growing frustration among community members who feel they lack a voice in decisions related to data center, solar, and wind farm development. His campaign will also prioritize key safety concerns, including road maintenance and improvements, as well as ensuring adequate staffing for EMS and fire protection services.

If elected, Newman would represent voters across Washington County, including the villages of Jackson, Newburg, and Slinger; the City of West Bend; and all or portions of the towns of Hartford, Polk, West Bend, Barton, and Trenton.

“I would like to thank Rick Gundrum for his commitment and dedication to the 58th Assembly District,” Newman said. “His departure motivated me to run and address what I see as a growing disconnect between state government and the people it is meant to serve. I want to be a representative known for always putting the best interests of the 58th District and the State of Wisconsin at the center of every decision.”

Bernie Newman is a lifelong resident of Washington County. In addition to living and working in the area, he has organized and participated in numerous events supporting local youth and veterans.

He has served on the City of West Bend Plan Commission; chaired the Washington County Conservation Congress and the Washington County Citizens Deer Advisory Committee; and is a member of the Republican Party of Washington County, the West Bend Moose Lodge, and a lifetime member of the Old Farmers Antique Club.

Newman is currently in his ninth year as President of Common Sense Citizens of Washington County and worked as a landscape crew leader on projects throughout the county.
